A Self-help Book for Widowers and Those Who Love Them.
A self-help book based on Fred Colby’s first-hand experiences as a widower and co-founder and co-facilitator of Pathways Men’s Grief Group and a national Men’s Grief Group. Fred’s book includes extensive research, and lessons learned by his fellow widowers. Widowers immediately identify with the author’s experience and are then more open to the lessons learned by the author and other widowers. Widower to Widower also serves as a resource to those entering the mental health and social service fields.
Fred’s book and blogs are designed to help his fellow widowers to survive this hell-on-earth experience which can lead to self-destructive behaviors such as alcohol and drug abuse, fractured relationships with family and friends, and loss of employment and/or financial security. There are few quality resources specific to widowers.
Widower to Widower Fills Gaps In the Genre
Widower to Widower is not overly clinical (a turn-off for most widowers), not religiously focused like many other books in the genre, and not afraid to speak to difficult topics (e.g. sexual drive, anger, etc). Blogs written before and after the death of the author’s wife allow the readers to be in that moment with the author. Examples drawn from other widowers are used to demonstrate alternative experiences and responses.
Reader Testimonies & Reviews
“ Great book! The sooner a widower reads it after losing his wife the better. ” — Pat Krummel
“Thank you for your words of wisdom. I have told several widowers about your book and how to order. God bless you! ” — Thomas Quirk
“A great book for any widower, I wish I had known about this 3-4 years ago, my life would have not been a living hell! – Jim Memory
Writer’s Digest Review – Judge’s Comments
“The writing is very well done. He (Fred Colby) mixes in his own personal experiences but also shares ideas on how the reader could have approached the same situations in a different manner. He doesn't come across as preachy, which happens in a lot of self-help books, but instead, the text reads as a sincere approach by someone who wants to help… Because women live longer than men, there are many more books about this topic written from the widow's perspective. This approach from the widower's point of view is well done…”

About Author Fred Colby
Fred Colby has served as a director, board member, and consultant for nonprofit organizations in California and Colorado. After his wife, Theresa, died in 2015 Fred shifted his focus to writing and leadership roles to help fellow widowers heal and re-engage with life. Fred was inspired by his therapist to write Widower to Widower because of the lack of good material available online and in bookstores and libraries to help him through his own grief. His writing experience in the nonprofit and political world, including newsletters, articles, editorials, plans, and major grant applications prepared Fred to write Widower to Widower.
